There is a challenge to hiking in the Northern Midwest in Spring. The run-off from the melting snow coupled with the unpredictability of the weather often leaves the trail a mucky, muddy mess.
I love it.
It can make even the simplest trek something new and interesting.
The Polk Kames State Ice Age Trail Area (SIATA) in East Central Wisconsin winds through a mix of forest and farm land. Connecting the National Ice Age Trail with a smaller series of local loops, it provides a nice 5 km trek for hikers looking for a short day trip.
We set out after noon, with the temperatures topping out in the mid-50s (F).
These yellow markers identify the Ice Age Trail from the local loops, keeping us moving in the right direction.
